Space Drafts 40: Harvesting the Sun and Chasing Phantom Asteroids!

Presentation Title: Harvesting Solar Energy: How to Collect and Store Light and Heat from the Sun

Presenter:  Liliana Ruiz Diaz, College of Optical Science
                   2016 Carson Scholar

Every second, we receive an immense amount of energy from the sun. Some of this energy is visible but some other is not. In this talk, Liliana Ruiz Diaz, a PhD student in the College of Optical Science and a 2016 Carson Scholar, will explore the types of energies produced by the sun and how can we efficiently collect it. At the UofA College of Optical Sciences, researchers are working on a solar collection system which utilizes large parabolic mirrors to efficiently concentrate and store sunlight.
