2023-2024 Carson Scholars Cohort

The 2023-2024 cohort of Carson Scholars consists of 14 UArizona graduate students with a wide range of identities, ages, and experiences. The academic makeup of this cohort includes:

  • 1 JD student, 2 MFA students, 11 Ph.D students
  • Students from the following colleges:
    • College of Science
    • College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
    • College of Law
    • College of Engineering
    • College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
    • College of Fine Arts

In Fall 2023, these 14 students engaged with the community all semester to learn from partners and educate the public in a variety of ways including:

  • Presenting Environment Talks
    • Six scholars presented their environmental research during two separate events at Borderlands Brewing Company and Sky Bar. 
    • One talk with high schoolers at Kino School, two scholars presented here.
  • Terrain.org essays
    • Students have been working with their faculty mentors to create articles for Terrain.org. Keep an eye out for publications toward the end of Spring 2024!

Carson Scholars have also had many opportunities to build their storytelling and communication skills including:

  • Beginning of year retreat at Biosphere 2. Scholars worked on their elevator pitches and Terrain.org essays while getting to know one another. 
  • Monthly workshops featuring guest speakers from our campus and Tucson community.

  • Two public talks at the Tumamoc Hill Boathouse on February 27th and March 27th. 
  • Participation in SEES Earth Week
  • Participation in the Tucson Festival of Books - Science City
  • Publications on Terrain.org
  • Selection of the 2024-2025 cohort
